The Cleveland Browns gave to me

How many renditions of the Twelve Day of Christmas are there? I know I must have written at least 6.  Well here is another.
Not the best but had fun writing it.

It was the first game of the season and the Cleveland Browns gave to me
A 21 to 18 loss - to Pittsburgh

It was the second game of the season and the Cleveland Browns gave to me
A beating from the ole Browns and a loss

It was the third game of the season and the Cleveland Browns gave to me
A 15 road game losing streak and a loss

It was the fourth game of the season and the Cleveland Browns gave to me
Sole possession of last place and a loss

It was the fifth game of the season and the Cleveland Browns gave to me
2 missed field goals, 3 bloody turnovers and a loss

It was the sixth game of the season and the Cleveland Browns gave to me
Another brutal beating and a loss

It was the seventh game of the season and the Cleveland Browns gave to me
A Joe Thomas injury, Kizer getting benched and a loss

It was the eighth game of the season and the Cleveland Browns gave to me
A game in faraway England so I wouldn’t see them lose and a loss

It was the ninth game of the season and the Cleveland Browns gave to me
A losing record for the 10th consecutive season and a loss

It was the tenth game of the season and the Cleveland Browns gave to me
2 interceptions, 2 Kizer fumbles; 5 lousy turnovers and a loss

It was the eleventh game of the season and the Cleveland Browns gave to me
Elimination from the play offs and a loss

It was the twelfth game of the season and the Cleveland Browns gave to me
The worst 28 game start ever and a loss

It was the thirteenth game of the season and the Cleveland Browns gave to me
A refund on my season tickets, an apology from the commissioner and a loss

It was the fourteenth game of the season and the Cleveland Browns gave to me
An autograph from Bill Belichick a Tom Brady jersey and a loss

It was the fifteenth game of the season and the Cleveland Browns gave to me
Who cares, what’s a Brown anyway and a loss

It was the last game of the season the Cleveland Browns better lose
I want to see the only 0-16 parade and a loss

Welcome to the Badlands of Cleveland.

I was on my way to Carnegie and instead of taking E.55th I decided on taking the E. 72nd exit to roads that pointed in that direction. GPS – no, inner compass – of course.

Man talk about taking a drive on the wild side. This is the part of Cleveland that is not all glammed up. I remember most of Clevo looking like this back in the day, it made me feel like popping open a can of warm POC. You from Cleveland know what I mean.

Forget about Aleppo what about these neighborhoods?
I saw a minimart that had a sign that said OPEN 7 DAYS – CLOSED THE REST, not bad open 7 days a year. The playground had barbwire around it, not sure if that was to keep the animals out or in? The only thing white was the snow and even that was an off-gray. I thought the artwork/graffiti was neat until I realized it wasn’t artwork but police outlines of victims’ bodies.
Maybe Lebron needs to dribble a ball down these alleys.

I did receive some stares and one car was on my bumper at every light blowing his horn and glaring at me. Do you think it was the Trump bumper sticker displayed on my car or am I being paranoid?

I drive fast to begin with but in certain areas it gives me a license to do my thing, after all does anyone really follow all laws in the underbelly of any city? One car was playing catch up with me; I caught him in my rear view mirror. I thought this could be interesting. Instead he swerved around me and out of sight. It was a white guy, prim n proper in a nice car. Either a probation officer or someone that strayed of the main and found himself cruising the forgotten.

In all it was very scenic. Boarded up buildings, run down houses. So how about taking a drive on the wild side, just call, I'm ready but I'm also driving.

Gotta Go-Go!

Gee, was this really made for my blog?
Sometimes the dim has to be shown so the light is even brighter.
I guess.

Sports Talk – Carey's Take

Love is the future
This was my initial reaction watching the Cavs opening game – Kevin Love was the best part of Lebron's return, he is the future. I also made this prediction that night that if the Cavs are mediocre by the end of January look for the Cavs to trade Lebron for a bunch of draft picks and young players and build around Love and Irving

Remember Lebron only has a two year deal and who is to say he will resign or is it possible that he just flat out retires? Other sport stars with plenty of years left retired while at the top of their game. And what I have seen of Lebron it seems that drive, the energy of earlier years is lacking. After all he has been in the league since the age of 18. Lets see how this plays out but thats what I predict can happen in the future, Lebron is gone but Love remains.

Browns have division and no division
Can any Cleveland team get it right? The Browns are in the midst of a play off run and 12 games into the season they switch quarterbacks? Even though their run game is almost non existent, injuries to their starting center and back up, with a cast of no name receivers Hoyer is standing in there finding ways to win. How soon we forget how inept the Browns have been the last 5 years. A 7 and 5 record should not produce panic.

Who is to blame for the bad routes and timing between Hoyer and Gordon? Gordon for getting suspended and the coaching staff for not weening him into games, not Hoyer. Gordon should not be getting as much playing time to disrupt the offense. Who is to blame for the fumbled balls? Letting go of Phil Dawson? Not finding a legit kick and punt returner? Not Hoyer.

Only Cincinnati won this past Sunday so the division is still up for grabs, no one is running away with it. This was not the time to change quarterbacks, shame on the coaching staff. Hoyer should finish the season and what ever the Browns record ends at it is still a drastic improvement over the past years and who knows the Browns could still pull off a division title. So let the quarterback controversy start next year in training.

As of now the Browns have division and will not win the division unless Manziel is put back on the bench and Hoyer propped back up.

Gripe one
Who else is tired of watching the black athlete with the curly dreadlocks spilling out from his helmet and flopping all over the place. One Troy Polamalu is enough, the rest look like a bunch of black Raggedy Ann dolls in football jerseys.

I hate pink
I hate that pink is being applied to all sports in recognition of breast cancer awareness. It sissifies the manliness of the game and really its not the place for it. Besides in Cleveland we have enough boobs running around on the field that we don't need to be reminded.

fire fire - hot photos

What timing!  I always carry a camera, ya just never know what you may see.  I was leaving a job on the marginal about a 1/4 mile from the MLK exit of Rt. 2 when I came upon this fiery mess.  Poor guy.

It was in this exact spot that I came across another car fire years back that I wrote about.  I tried finding it in my Yahoo archive so I could include it with this but couldn't locate it.  If I do, will repost it to compare notes.  In that fire I think it was a Blazer, no joke.

19 Action news were interested in my photos but by the time the 10 pm news was aired breaking stories of the missing airplane came in.

No one was hurt here but it did create a spectacle and one nasty traffic jam.

Life in Cleveland

New series called "DESPERATE SPORTS FANS".
Based in Cleveland about disillusioned Browns backers and fans who sneak out wearing black and gold routing for the Pittsburgh Steelers while trying not to get caught. Airing this fall.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I am currently transferring all my home videos to DVD. I was watching the one from '96 where I was involved with the march to bring back the Browns and protesting PSL's.
I said in the video "..For those at home PSL's mean pre-seat license" and then I said "Or for us in Cleveland it means Poor Sticking Losers."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Later on in the same video we starting shouting NO PSL'S which turned into NO PEANUT SHELLS. Hey you have to see the video, it is funny.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Pittsburgh Steelers theme this year is : Stairway to 7 a take off of a song by Led Zeppelin titled Stairway to Heaven. The Browns also have theirs taken from a Beatles song, I'm a loser.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Owner of the Cavs Dan Gilbert said after LeBron left that Cleveland would win a championship before he would. Since saying that Gilbert's public appearances have been about as frequent as a Cavs win.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Cavs could be the first team to win over 60 games and then the following year lose over 60. No punch line, just funny.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Cleveland tried in the last presidential election to host the Republican National Convention but failed which is a shame because they could of highlighted what the Dems have done in this city. Cleveland has tried again this year to get the Democratic National Convention but still fell short. I guess the reasoning this time is Cleveland is already getting the Gay Games so why have the same group of people here twice?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Maybe another reason Charlotte got the Democratic Convention for 2012 is because all of the good Democrats of Cleveland won't be out of jail in time.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Dumb criminals. This is true. Can't say where but one of my accounts that I maintain in Cleveland was busted in to. This office has all kinds of electronic devices and computers. What did the criminal escape with? One projector and ready for this.... an unusable broken laptop. Duh!

Philippine Traffic part 3

I do have to tell you about the van ride in Cebu.
Ruth and I left the airport and went to a mall. After lunch and some shopping we decided to leave there and go to a bigger mall. So she found us a van that was heading there.

We get in this van that was parked in a large lot outside of the mall and we just sat. I asked Ruth whats going on? She said the driver is waiting until it fills up.

The van was a Nissan. It seemed just a bit bigger than the mini vans in the states but maybe it was just because all of the other cars are so small there. The roof was slightly raised, has a bench seat up front instead of the typical individual seats, behind that was a long narrow carpeted box that you could sit on, then three bench seats and each had a small jump seat attached at the end.

Finally it was filled with nine people and I thought OK three on each bench seat we can go now, but nope. The small jump seats were folded down. We waited until three more got on. That brought the total to twelve. I thought for sure we can go now, nope. We waited again until two more boarded up front, that made 15 and that shut the door. We were finally off. But then we stopped and picked up another passenger for a total of sixteen people and some with bags. Let me tell you, it was cramped.  All these passengers in an average size van with just normal tires. Try doing this in America.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I am just now reading the newspapers I brought home from the trip. There are two articles from different writers about the plight of what to do with the traffic, pollution and congestion. I am telling you, its that bad.
The Philippine government tried a novel idea awhile back and is thinking of renewing it again that most are against. Its called the Odd and Even. It bans any vehicles from using the Epifanio de los Santos Avenue ( EDSA), with odd plate number endings on Monday, Wednesday and Friday and even plate number endings on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. They are also thinking of raising the gas price so people won't drive as much and also the idea of not issuing as many bus liscenses. Another has government workers only working 4 days from 7 am till 6 pm. Or possibly vehicle reduction by taking off the road vehicles that are deemed unsafe but they are not sure what to do with the displaced drivers who make a living driving. None of these are sensible if you ask me.
But it is BAD, one study showed that the thoroughfare EDSA could only accomodate 1,600 buses but about 3,000 use it now and that does not count cars, trucks and other forms of transportation. Makes me appreciate living in a live ghost town like Cleveland where the rush hour is 20 minute long on a real busy day.
Serious though I hope this doesn't come to America, whoops in a way it already has with proposals to raise gas taxes, the push to rid us of our big cars, and the EPA mandates, maybe we should send Obama and EGore to fix things.
More to come....
The Bridge Project
Hey Gang,
A quick postingl with some photos from a few weekends ago of the Bridge Project. I want to thank Sharon for posting this event on the GoGo Board. This is an event everyone should see at least once.
The Bridge Project is held on the lower level of the Detroit/Superior bridge in downtown Cleveland. This is where the old trolley cars use to run. I was so completely amazed at how much space is below ground. I never knew that Cleveland at one time had a subway, at least parts of it were underground.
Dad remembers it vaguely as a kid. My grandfather never had a car and they would take the trolley to the zoo and to get around Cleveland. Dad said it would be scary going over the bridge as they would sit near the back and were able to look down through the grating at the river way below.
What I completely don't understand is the lameness of Cleveland. They are trying to come up with all kinds of ways for mass transit and the push today is for electric vehicles, well why don't they just refurbish the old street car lines? I just don't get it, the structure is already in place.
You really need to experience this event. Its very hard to describe. Just walking around looking at the massiveness and details of the pillars and work is something to behold. The condition and the eeriness reminded me of the Mansfield Reformatory. The craftsmanship of years ago is such a lost art, never again to be duplicated.
Something else got my attention that to me strikes down the theory of the earth being millions of years old. Hanging from the roof of the lower level were stalactites. They were about 15 inches or so long. Now if they could grow that long in a relatively short period of time, think of how fast they could grow underground with the right conditions.
As for the art, entertainment and oddball displays it was completely eclectic. There were a couple of stages set up for bands, one band was conventional, the other was pots and pans. There was a small stage set up for plays. A few sitting rooms that you can't quite explain the inspiration for their design. A Dj playing rave music. Beer, hot dog and food stands. Weird old movies playing from projectors being shown on the walls. Just very odd and so amusing the different styles of entertainment. One person had a neat novel idea. He set up a microphone and video camera and if you told a joke he would give you a nickel. It was to promote his website service. Here is the link: http://www.sillyservices.com/.
See if you can find me telling two of my Carey originals. If you can't spot me I will tell
the number.
The atmosphere was almost Goth in feel because of the lighting and condition, sort of like those futuristic movies where everything is destroyed and people are making the most what they have. Just a very fun and entertaining evening that broke the monotony of the norm.
Why Cleveland didn't promote this more is beyond me. Make plans for next year and attend it, you won't be disappointed.
As one season ends......
Hey Gang,
Ahhh yes.... the unmistakeable joy of being a Cleveland sports fan. While one highly successful season ends - another one is under way, in case you haven't guessed I am being facetious.
Wednesday Walt had extra tickets to see the Indians play. Wonder why he had extra's? He won them at the Painesville Speedway raffle. I asked you sure it wasn't a booby prize? To make matters worse, he won two sets of tickets. Well I couldn't let Walt sit alone watching the pathetic tribe so I went along.
Gosh was the place empty. We guesstimated ohhhhh maybe 8,000, MAYBE. It was funny, everyone we asked didn't pay for their tickets. This couple behind us said their place of employment had 100 tickets for the employees but they still were left with 75.
The fans who did not attend missed out because the Indians didn't disappoint, they put on another stellar performance losing the game only by a few runs, 11 to 3. Very close.
If you aren't from Cleveland you don't understand the game plan. Its called the 5 year plan. Every 5 years they trade all their good players and rebuild. And then they tell us BOY just wait in 5 years this teem will be good and then they trade all the good players away and on and on it goes.
I still think its a debt Cleveland owes to organized crime. OK we let you win in '48 and let you get close in the 90's but you still owe us your good players - Capeesh?
I mean it was weird, who were these new guys? I saw only one name I recognized, Hafner, now why didn't they ship him out? Simple, he fits in with the scheme of things, non productive.
If that wasn't bad enough watching this horrible rendition of the movie Major league as we were leaving they gave me a schedule for next year. I asked the guy you mean they are coming back, how insulting?
And so it goes but lets not lose heart, we still have the Browns, and if all goes well, we may win a game.
As that old over used saying goes, Go Tribe and take the Browns with you but please do it soon we could use that stadium for a good flea market.
Why the Cavs won't win the NBA championship
Hey Gang,
I guess this isn't travel related but it is a fun article so I posted it here. Maybe it will find its way to David Letterman.
So here is my top ten list why the Cleveland Cavs won't win the NBA championship.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I know its early and the Cavaliers have to win one more series to get to the finals but it still has all of us in Cleveland thinking what can go wrong this time? 2 years ago when the Cavs made the finals it came as such a shock that we didn't have enough time to fret. But in typical Cleveland fashion our beloved home team didn't disappoint us, the Cavaliers never showed up in losing to the Spurs in four straight. This time though the Cavs are so good, this season is so dream like that something just has to go wrong, it can't be possible Cleveland can actually win a championship.

So here is my top ten list why the Cleveland Cavaliers won't win the NBA championship.

10. Lebron James gets hurt.

9. Reality dawns on the Cavaliers and they realize this is still Cleveland we're not suppose to win.

8. Michael Jordan comes out of retirement.

7. Lebron James will be forced to finish the 12 grade because they found out he is short one credit.

6. The entire team comes down with the swine flu.

5. Manny Ramírez finks on Lebron as the one who gave him the performance-enhancing drugs.

4. Obama steps in with his spreading the wealth theory and says Lebron is too good, he can only play 20 minutes to make it fairer for the opposing team.

3. The Cavaliers pregame antics cause a delay of game and they're issued a technical foul before play even starts which causes them to lose the 7Th game by one point.

2. Lebron throws so much powder in the air the Cavs come down with asthma and can't run.

And the NUMBER ONE reason why the Cavaliers won't with the NBA championship is..........

John Elway appears on the sideline of the opposing team and leads them on a drive to score the winning basket.

One more look back

Hey Gang,
This was suppose to be posted last week but I had computer trouble. Sort of my fault. I couldn't remove a CD from my computer so I hit it. Well the CD drawer came open with the CD still spinning at a million revolutions per minute but the computer was knocked off line and I couldn't reconnect. I got it running again, actually Mom did, she has more patience and faith then I do. I was ready to throw the pc away not her, she wasn't about to let up.
Anyways, here are a few of my favorite photos for the year 2008. These are just scenery. Tomorrow I will send out another with just people.
Enjoy!

Have you ever had that sinking feeling?

Hey Gang,
Have you ever had that sinking feeling? Well I did
twice in one day last Wednesday.
The first time was at 2pm when I got the mail. In
it was a letter from Euclid harassing me about my
rentals. Let me tell you the Socialists are gaining
strength. Wait till they start sending you notices of
fines and jail time if you don't comply to their
extortion you'll understand that feeling. But I don't
want to talk about that situation, thats for another
email. The second sinking feeling is the one I want
to write about.
Walt belongs to the Aqua Amigos diving club. They
have made me an honorary member or maybe more like
they allow me to attend their club functions even if I
can only barely swim let alone dive though I have been
to plenty of dives to eat at.
The Aqua Amigos meeting this past Wednesday was held
in Cleveland at the site of the USS Cod the WWII era
submarine. What a treat!

Heed this warning

 Normally I would not post something this serious but it does go along with traveling, especially the link I included. Please read this and be careful!!!

Hey Gang,
Heed this warning!!!
  Be careful the police are out in force! Not sure where you live but the freeways around Cleveland are buzzing with cops.  Every time the economy sours and revenue needs to be brought in the quotas get raised.  This is where my disdain for the police lies, they foolishly follow orders to balance the cities budgets.
Think I am crazy?  In the Cleveland area stop light cameras have appeared.  What was the reason?  Money!  Never in any of the interviews, papers, or articles I read did it mention even in the least bit safety.  In East Cleveland the Mayor was bragging how much money they raised. Is this the duty of law enforcement to raise revenue?  Its been a ploy for years, projects have to be paid for or there is budget cuts and funds are needed, just issue more tickets. This is such a dangerous precedent when police are used to balance budgets or raise funds. Read history. Many of the dictatorship governments had their arm of revenue raisers, don't pay for whatever reason, jail and confiscate. When will this nonsense stop?
Traffic fines and misdemeanors are the easiest way to raise money. Why? Most people won't fight them because the cost to do so is greater than the actual fine. We all just ante up, pay and plead no contest or guilty.
Furthermore, most traffic laws and some misdemeanors are so frivolous they need to be applied with common sense and leeway. Face it, everyone reading this has broken traffic laws at some time and some of us break those laws daily. Does this make all of us criminals or dangerous? Absolutely not. Traffic and misdemeanor laws should be used as a guideline only and enforcement of them, once again I need to mention it, with common sense and an extension of courtesy.
My sister got a ticket for doing 35 mph in a 25 late at night, with no other traffic around in a commercial zone. She is a nurse, has a clean record, a new car and wasn't under the influence. Was anyone in danger with her traveling 10 mph over the posted limit? Of course not. Did the cop care? Nope! She got a ticket. How many of us can relate to this?
So why my tirade? I received a ticket for a no turn on red. If you are not familiar with the intersection where this happened I can guarantee you would of turned right also. It is very poorly marked and at a place you have to question why can't I turn right on red? Even after the cop told me, I didn't believe it was marked so I went back later on and took photos of the intersection.
The same situation played out as with my sister receiving her ticket. The cop asked for my license and registration. Did he ask any other questions like if I was familiar with the intersection? Did he take in to consideration my clean driving record? Did he take in to account I was not under the influence, the condition of my car? NO to all of these! He just wrote the ticket and immediately after issuing it he left the side street he was lurking on where he could view the intersection. I am positive he was stationed there for no other reason than to write easy tickets to fill quota.
Instead of waiving the ticket and saving court costs I chose to attend court to fight it. The judge didn't give me much of a chance to speak because of my clean driving record with zero points she quickly ruled on the case. The judge said she has a policy of keeping clean driving records clean so instead of a traffic ticket it was changed to a non-driving offense with a fine of $75 plus court costs. The gavel went down, case closed.
I left the court room feeling somewhat better until I went to pay the fine. I thought $75 plus costs would be around $110.00. Nope! $172.00!!!
The break down of the fine reads as such:
Continuance (I asked for a new date) $ 2.00
Victims of crime $ 9.00
State Revenue Fund $15.00
Court Costs $41.00
Computer Fund $ 5.00
Special Project $10.00
Criminal Justice $ 5.00
Charge Amendment $10.00
Fine/Lyndhurst $75.00
Reading this list now understand what I am getting at? Computer fund? Victims of crime? Special Project? How does those fit in with my penalty? It doesn't. Us drivers are cash cows to the local government, plain and simple. Enforcement of traffic laws are as much or more about raising money as it is about safety.
Same with wearing a seat belt it should be left up to the discretion of the occupants of the car. But this summer there is a campaign called click it or ticket to make sure you are using your seat belt. Law enforcement will be conducting traffic blitzes. Do you like that terminology? Originally seat belt tickets were a secondary offense which means you couldn't be stopped for not wearing one. Only if you were stopped for another offense could you be given a seat belt violation ticket. Now it doesn't matter. This gives law enforcement another reason to stop you to find something wrong and more access to your wallet.
Our government is quickly becoming so intrusive so big brother so controlling that we are close to losing what little freedom we have left. If we don't fight back and say enough there will come a time we won't have a voice to do so. That also will be silenced.

How most Clevelander's spent their Friday nights in the 60's & 70's part 2

Hey Gang,
I had such positive feedback from the "How most Clevelander's spent their Friday nights" email that I decided to send part 2 with more recollections I had of Hoolihan & Big Chuck.
Cindy R. responded with That almost brought a tear to my eye. Good memories and good writing…
Vince in Pa. some how viewed the show and wrote: Hi Carey, great e-mail! Even tho I have lived 100 miles away from Cleveland , I was able to watch Ghoulardi (Turn Blue!), and Hoolihan & Big Chuck. Not only did I watch them, but my son grew up watching Big Chuck & lil John.
And Sherry wrote I remember all of this. I watched it even in elementary school whilethe goul was on. As I got older, I would only watch sometimes. Memories!

Ahh yes!!!!!!!! It made me feel good to have people reminisce with me. Some other memories I had of the show was the different characters and skits they came up with.
One of my favorites was the Kielbasy Kid with Kiesh the Wonder Dog. This character was a western gunslinger but in his holster instead of a gun was a kielbasa. Years ago at a store called Clarkins they were giving away cardboard posters of the Kielbasy Kid, believe it or not I still have mine and its hanging on my wall. Being little back then I couldn't figure out how Big Chuck and the Kielbasy Kid could be the same person and I thought he was known everywhere in America.
Then there was Soul Man, a black super hero dressed like Superman. Its a shame people are so touchy today with laughing at the differences between nationalities. There was no ill-tent involved it was just for laughs.
They even had a pizza eating contest which made a celebrity out of Mushmouth Mariano Pachetti. He had many challengers but always won and wore the belt home. On one pizza eating match he went up against a German Sheppard though I don't remember the outcome.
Or what about the silly spin off called Mary Hartski, Mary Hartski!
There was also Reading's by Roberts and plenty of skits with a character called Stash, I could go on with even more memories but will end it here.
I need to make a correction, I had the date wrong, Ghoulardi went off the air in '66 soon replaced by Hoolihan & Big Chuck. From what I understand Ghoulardi was chased off the airways because his character was to controversial and a bad influence for the kids. As much as Hoolihan & Big Chuck were loved, according too anyone old enough to have watched him, Ghoulardi was the King and pioneer that many afterward tried to copy but never succeeded in coming close.
Enjoy these additional clips.

How most Clevelander's spent their Friday nights in the 60's & 70's

Hey Gang,
For those in the Cleveland area this is a neat flash back and for those not in the Cleveland area this is how most Clevelander's spent their Friday nights in the 60's and 70's, watching Hoolihan & Big Chuck. In fact in the 60's crime actually went down in Cleveland on Friday nights while the show was on.
Hoolihan & Big Chuck took over about 1963 for Ghoulardi who left Cleveland for greener pastures in California. Ghoulardi (Ernie Anderson) did many commercials and was the voice that said the "Love Boat" a TV series from the 1970's. Both Ghoulardi and Hoolihan & Big Chuck were movie hosts that showed B movies at 11:30 pm on Friday nights on channel 8, CBS. During commercial breaks they would show skits or funnies as we would call them in our family. Their campy humor made them local celebrities. They did many charities, had their own baseball and basketball team made up of local TV personalities. And who can ever forget those cheesy movies. The show always ended with Hoolihan in a leopard print night gown and Big Chuck in a red one telling corny jokes sent in from viewers.
Their favorite skits and jokes would always be about Parma , Polish and Pollocks until political correctness, yes it started way back then, got them in trouble and they had to start saying a person from a certain ethnic background. Whats funny is Big Chucks last name is Shadowski. Does anyone remember them joking about people living in Parma always wear white socks?
In the mid 70's Hoolihan left and was replaced by Lil John. It was never the same, even though they stuck around until last year, 2007, when they finally retired. It truly was an end of an era. Years ago that was about all there was to watch, you had very few channel's. Plus everything is so rehearsed and run by the media conglomerates no way would a show be made like this today. Plain and simple the show was silly fun.
Cleveland had a few other movie hosts but never as popular. On channel 43 on Saturday afternoon's there was Super Host played by Marty Sullivan who was also a newscaster. Likewise, Hoolihan's real name was Bob Wells and was meteorologist for channel 8, his nick name was Hoolihan the Weatherman.
It truly is an end of an era, never to return.
I met Big Chuck twice most recently at the Woolly Bear Festival in 2006. If you want to see a recent photo of him go to http://www.gogobus.cc/ click on snapshots and then click on Celebrities.
