Homewood Bound 2

Sunday was far more eventful. Some of it had to do with the sleep I got. Interrupted but I slept about 9 hours or more. I should have had my table set up by at least 10 am but I was in no hurry. I freshened myself up at the sink in the fire department then I was off to find a church. There is only one church close by and that is the Homewood United Methodist right by Buttermilk Falls. The church had a booth at the festival serving homemade vegetable soup and apple dumplings.

I took the shortcut across the tracks and down a path close to the falls. It was barely after 11 am but the church doors were locked. I walked to the back of the church where there was people coming out with containers of food. They asked if I was hungry. I said no I was coming for church. Well service was from 9:30 to 10:30, we like to start early. Shucks. So I took a walk to the falls, snapped some photos and started walking back to the festival.

On the tracks coming towards me was a man. He asked how do you get to the falls? We introduced ourselves and had a nice conversation right on the tracks. I guess you can say our conversation never got off track. His name was Glen a Sargent with the police dept. who is now retired but is still active. Glen is a Christian so we sort of had church right there. He has some story.

Glen has seen so much in his years as a cop. Horrible things. Glen said what is going on with the police today is terrible. No people skills. He thinks he can teach police today how to diffuse a situation. We swapped stories back and forth. He also said how sad it is today. Years ago if a boy broke a window you would tell him I better see you in church on Sunday or else. They would attend and you made a friend. Or you would make them clean the windows at church but not today, you can’t tell someone to go to church or have a kid clean windows because of the child labor laws.

Glen also did some writing for the TV series Knight Rider and hopes to write a book someday.

Homewood Bound 1

Well my plans of arriving in Homewood, Pa. by 8 pm Friday was foolish. I should know myself by now. I left a bit after 4 am and arrived at my destination by 6:15 am with the help of Philip.

Who is Philip? I didn’t quite remember where Homewood was so I went to Beaver Falls. The first gas station I saw I pulled in to ask for direction. Just as I did another car was doing the same. I get out and approach this man’s car, he gets out also. He started first, what year is your van? I told him and then asked for directions. You're not from around here. Nope. And you don't have GPS. Nope. Well go down a few lights and take a left when you see… ah you're not going to find it, follow me. With that he took off and I followed. He got me right to where I should be, the fire station and what’s even better? As I pulled in a man was unlocking the door and that was my contact, Alan. Perfect-o timing. Thanks again Philip.

Saturday the book signing was slow made even slower by the hour of sleep I had. I only slept from 6:30 am till 7:30 am because the breakfast was at 8 am. I was set up in the fire station greeting people coming in for the all you can eat pancake breakfast and sausage. Hardly anyone looked interested. There were two other reasons for the sort of low turnout. The weather threatened rain all day and the main road in is down to one lane. They chose to start the road work on a Saturday. The town is upset because this is their yearly big event. But what I lacked in sales was made up by plenty of smiles, handshakes and making new friends. I especially liked teasing and talking to lil’ Rocko and his sister who are both in school. Rocko if you are out there I still think you should dress up like a pancake for Halloween.

About 3 pm it started to drizzle so I wrapped things up and took a nap. I told Karen at the display next to the Go-Go Bus to wake me if the sun comes out. She forgot, I'm glad she did. When I woke at 6:30 pm the sun was out but the whole town was rolled up. No one around. It was like aliens dissolved everyone and I was the last one alive.

I took a long drive one way but there were no towns.

So spun around and headed into Beaver falls. I drove up and down for over an hour looking for a grocery store. I was told by one person there is nothing but Save A Lot. C’mon this can’t be. So I drove around some more and another person told me, yep that’s all there is in Beaver Falls unless you drive a distance to another town and there is Giant Eagle. I was not driving any further to get food at the big bird so I wandered into a bordering town and found an old grocery store called Foodland. That’s where I shopped. Old school.

I went back to the Bus and set up camp. South Western Pa. is hilly and so is Homewood. I thought I was parked level enough but I wasn’t. Have you ever tried sleeping on a slant? All the blood rushes to one side of your body. Before dozing off I walked the town. Eerie. A silent town, an abandoned hotel with railroad tracks that had trains rumbling through constantly. I locked the doors and tried to get some good sleep. I did between the intervals of the train passing through which seemed like every 20 minutes.

I woke about 9 when I heard the festival get started. A car arrived early for the car cruise so I had to straighten the Go-Go Bus. When I opened the door I heard jangling. Hey there’s my keys. I slept with the keys in the door lock. My goodness. Someone could have driven off with the Bus with me in it. I fell back to sleep until almost 11 am.

The end of part one.

The Stoneboro Fair

Hey Gang,
Summer is not complete unless you attend a fair. Every summer has to include a festival or two and a fair. Its just not summer if it doesn't.

The fair I picked out this summer was the Stoneboro, Pa. fair. Small town America at its finest.

I forgot how hilly Pa is. When I think of hills and mountains I think of WV, Tenn. but Pa sure has its share of up and down and twisty roads. The parking lot was on a hill and the fairgrounds were separated by a high and low section accessible by two tunnels. In between was the track for the different events such as the popular demolition derby and even a kiddy demo derby.

They had a slew of food vendors, rides, livestock, a wildlife exhibit, a huge antique tractor gathering but was lacking in vendors that most fairs have. It was 10 bucks to get in but that included everything, rides and the entertainment. So not a bad deal.

The demolition derby was a blast. The lady next to me got a wee bit too excited. She punched her husband and then pushed me. My coffee went for a ride landing on me. She apologized and said I get a little excited. I said its OK but next time I sit next to you I am wearing a raincoat.

Enjoy the photos.

The car with the pink roof. That was incredible. It had its back wheels torn off, one front wheel barely on but it kept going. Amazing. It came in second place.

Carey’s Day in Court

Well I won or did I? One charge was dropped, one was lowered and zero points on my license but a stiff fine was still paid that made my wallet say OUCH!

Let’s rewind and start from the beginning. On Saturday July 30th I went to the West Farmington Festival which is in the Amish country of Trumbull County in Ohio. It’s a hokey little festival but refreshing. I enjoyed myself. Because of the tickets I received I didn’t give it a review or write about it until now. If you didn’t feel welcome would you?

I parked on College Street right in front of the field holding it. I could have easily made a U turn when leaving with my lil Daewoo but it was dark and foggy on a poorly lit road with Amish, horse and buggy and kids everywhere so drove until it was clear then turned around

Going back on College Street I puttered along at no more than 10 to 15 mph. I stopped at the stop sign at the intersection of Rt.88. A car was approaching and instead of waiting I zoomed out and then I resumed my low speed. Unfortunately the car I raced in front of was a cop. He followed me a good distance I mean a good distance. Once we got past the area of the festival and a road crew I picked up speed to almost 35 mph when he finally turned on his lights. Why did he wait so long? That aggravated me.

He approached and said you ran the stop sign and didn’t use a turn signal. I was so confused, yes just like a deer in headlights. I said slowly I stopped. Back and forth, no you didn’t – yes I did. I did however admit to the turn signal, no argument there. In my defense if there even was an argument, there was no one behind me, no one in front and no one to the left and moving so slow it just slipped my mind to use the turn signal.

Anyway I mentioned to the cop my clean record and no ticket since 2008 and he replied I can see that. He then said I am giving you a ticket for the stop sign and no turn signal. I was fuming mad. When I got home I checked on the waiver fees, it was $300 for both with 2 points for each infraction. YIKES! 4 points $300 fine just for a leisure night out!

I will be a brief as possible because I have a lot to write about but quickly I can completely understand the angst and frustration with cops. Now I am not talking about the Michael Browns, I am talking about the average citizen who is really victimized by our system. In this case 4 points and $300 instead of a warning or a courtesy to a person with a clean record, out minding his own business, not under the influence, not speeding just cruising slowly enjoying a summer night.

John, a friend, told me one of the reasons why he hated being a cop. There were cops where he worked who would have contests to see who could give out the most tickets. Plus he enlightened me to the meaning of ORC and ORD. ORD = city ordinance and ORC = Ohio Revised Code.

When he was employed as a cop he would mark the ORC box. He was reprimanded and told to mark the ORD box instead. The reason is the city/town keeps all the money from a ticket whereas ORC you have to share the fine money with the state. John had enough and quit. The tickets I received both had the ORD marked. Aren’t turn signals and stop signs state law? It’s all about the money and rarely safety.

I was so upset with these tickets I drove back to West Farmington which is about 55 miles from my house twice to check out the spot where I got the tickets; well it would have been one if I remembered to bring my camera the first time. The more I looked the madder I got.

So instead of waving the tickets I went to court way out in Newton Falls that is 60 miles from me. The first appearance was for a plea which the judge said it seems you have questions and concerns so maybe you should plead not guilty and meet with the prosecutor. So I did. The second court date was Thursday the 25th of August.

I will say this as much as I was upset with the cop and the cost of these two tickets and the time spent on them the judge of Newton Falls and prosecutor restored some of my faith in the system. Both were cordial and made you relax, definitely not heavy-handed.

When I met with the prosecutor I was prepared. What also helped was they summoned the patrolman but he never showed. The prosecutor could have issued a continuance but wanted to get it over with it. So I presented my case. I showed him my book. HUH? Yes my Hey Gang! Ready to Go-Go? and started with I am an author and I travel to these little festival/events and write about them. The prosecutor said I seen that vehicle… was it outside in the parking lot? Yes I slept in it for my first court appearance so I wouldn’t be late. Well that vehicle attracted a lot of attention.

Then I proceeded to tell him that even the phone number on the ticket the cop wrote to call the court house for the time and date was wrong. I showed him the photos and admitted to the no turn signal. When it was done the stop sign was thrown out, the no turn signal was lowered to an equipment violation and was able to keep my record clean of points. Thank God!

The final cost was Stop Sign - $5 court costs and the No Tail Light - $100 fine $95 court costs $30 misc. costs for a grand total of $230. How ya like that? So even though I won I still paid court costs and what is the 30 bucks for misc? A fine should be a fine not all this added nonsense. America is messed up. You can never get true justice when they look at us as revenue. Small annoyance tickets like this people rarely fight because it is cheaper to pay.

After court I went on a long leisurely stroll that covered miles all the way from Newton Falls, Warren, Mosquito Lake to Andover and Pymatuning Lake on home.

First stop was for breakfast at a truck stop outside of Newton Falls in Leavittsburg called Shortstop Truck Plaza, independently owned and run. The breakfast was delicious. The owner each morning goes out and buys fresh sirloin for the ground meat. The owner’s daughter told me one early morning Jesse the son received a call they were out of potatoes. So at 4 am he was out getting potatoes.

I carried my book inside with me. Whenever I travel I always carry my book with me you never know who may buy a copy. I was making small talk with a lady the next table over and said I am an author take a look at this while your friends fills out her application for employment. I sit back down and it made me feel so good. The lady opened my book to page 69 and had an expression of amazement. She told her friend is that from God? I felt wonderful.

I forgot her name but the church lady met her friend for lunch. The friend is going through some trying times. She is looking for a job and the restaurant was hiring. Then the church lady was trying to encourage her when she opened my book. God works in ways we can’t see. From there I drove through Warren and stopped at an antique shop called 1717 Antiques. Definitely one of the better antiques stores around. What I like about it is its very cluttered with things strewn all over from every era. I like the hunt of finding a neat collectable. I ended the day somehow in Pymatuning. I went to the beach but instead of swimming I laid back in my car and took a nice nap before the ride home.

And that was my day in and out of court.

2016 Jimco Jamboree

Hey Gang,
What a fun Saturday.

I went to the 2016 Jimco Jamboree Vintage RV Rally in Thompson.
Jimco and his wife Lydia host the free event on their tree farm. What great hosts, they have such easy laid back personalities you feel right at home.

Jimco helps you park and then greets you with a wooden pallet he places at your rv door so you can enter your rv without tracking mud or dirt in. Nice touch. And some of the sites come with electric hook up.

I parked right next to the pond that has a fountain in the middle of it. I needed no sound machine as that made a nice soothing sound to put me to sleep.

I hate mentioning anyone when there is a group outing because someone always feels bad for being left out, for that matter I do also for leaving someone out. The whole group was great. The Canadian’s who attended were great to talk you. I love our northern neighbors. And then there is Harwood. Who lives up above us in Kitchener I believe. Harwood is one card. The man is beyond funny.

Sunday morning I took a long loop home to take a look at the scene of my travel infraction, which is a whole other story.
That route had me going through Middlefield on to West Farmington where I received my ticket a week before at the West Farmingtom Festival. I parked the Go-Go Bus at an abandoned school and walked around snapping photos of where I was pulled over.

A lady saw me and asked is that your van? My daughter would love it. I yelled back Hey can I give her a postcard it has the Go-Go Bus on it? She turned around. Her name was Marie and her daughter’s name is Katie who was riding around New York on a Harley as were speaking.
Marie and I talked for a bit, gave her a quick look inside the Bus and she bought a book. Nice! She took photos of me next to the Bus and a selfie of us.

Hmmm…. Question…. A selfie is where a person takes a picture of themselves so is a selfie with two people a twofie?

Anyway…. Hi Marie and Katie if you are out there.

I did quite well with the selling of my book over the weekend. Some sold at the Jimco Jamboree and one on the road. And that’s usually where I sell the most books at events or meeting people. The Purple People Greeter is always having people stop it to take a look.
I love meeting people and my book Hey Gang! Ready to Go-Go? connects with people who love road trips, travel and have their own experiences. Then there is the group of people who buy my book just to shut me up. But I love them to.

Life

Last year about this time started an ugly spell. Actually it started on July 4th weekend with the Go-Go Bus breaking down in Tionesta, Pa and from there the troubles got worse with it, so much so I never used it again last year.

I only include this because the Bus is an instrument to go out and make money with book signings and meeting people so please in no way think I am comparing it to losing a life.

After that episode, it started a string of losing friends and Dad and other issues with friends I won't mention here.

Late July last year the wife of my tenant since 1999 died in my rental. Art months prior was placed in a nursing home because of Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s.

August a close friend tried committing suicide.

Dad got sick and died a few days after Thanksgiving.

A longtime friend of close to 30 years committed suicide in May.

Another longtime friend went to prison for 5.5 years for something I wish not to talk about.

Dennis just lost his mother at a very young age.

And recently someone I have known since kindergarten and a friend died suddenly. I wasn’t even aware she was sick so to me it was suddenly. Though we have some what drifted and it’s been years since we hung out or she came over we would still greet each other with either a hug or smile. I will miss seeing Margaret at the stores I would frequently see her at. Those stores will definitely seem emptier now.

Yes I know I have many friends and each one is valuable and contributed something to my life but those friends I lost were especially close. And Dad… well you can’t replace losing a Dad.

Wednesday the 4th of May

Hey Gang,
So what did I Carey Masci decide to do on Wednesday the 4th of May?

This question was posed on Facebook:
OK help me choose. I have an opportunity tonight to attend 2 closed intimate events. One is a dress up $125 plate dinner and the other is dust off the ole leather and listen to a private jam session with a well-known legendary local artist. Which do I attend?

And the responses were – 9 for the leather clad event and 3 for the dress up $125 plate dinner.

Yes you sure can learn a lot from Facebook and I learned my friends are into leather and jam. Um something like that.
So which did I attend? The dinner… I was hungry, really hungry for some beyond delicious gourmet food with wine that was all you could eat and drink. What was better than that? The venue where the event was held - the Crawford Auto Aviation Museum.

You got to mingle with the crowd, enjoy gourmet food and wine while looking at cars. My what a great time. I over ate on the food and under drank on the wine. I was worried that too much wine and I may have tried driving one of those cars. Nothing worse than getting a DUI indoors.

After we had our fill, Michael Smith and I headed home. I noticed hey it is still early Mike we are going to the jam session. And we did. Nothing like killing two events with one suit.

Now I can’t mention where this was held because it was not an open event. But the crowd was way more down to earth. There were some Angels in attendance, not the ones who ride on clouds but on bikes. But I sure can tell you who the performers were, Glenn Schwartz and Butch Armstrong. Man these guys are talented, old school guitar playing at its finest.
Both still play out on occasion and if you never seen them just go. They won’t disappoint.

We hung out for a bit and enjoyed the music.
Leaving was fun. I got a few looks walking in but even more so walking out. I was dressed in an all-black tux/suit and shoes with a plain button up dress shirt and Mike dressed similar. I am sure they had to think what they hey are these guys doing here, is it the feds or the men in black? They may never know it was just me, oh well.

Some people wish for one event, I can say I was blessed to do both. And now you know how my Wednesday the 4th of May went. How did yours go?
